As we reached Kiara’s house, a small smile tugged at my lips. I’d been here so many times before, yet the sight of it always gave me this warm, homely feeling.

The sleek white walls stood tall against the evening sky, the golden lights tracing the edges like a crown. Massive glass windows reflected the fading blue above, and the pool shimmered under the soft glow of embedded lights. The wide marble steps leading up to the patio were lined with perfectly trimmed shrubs. It wasn’t just a house—it was the kind of place that made you feel welcome the moment you stepped in.

I was staying here again—this time because my brother was out of the country for two weeks for work, and Kiara’s mom had instantly insisted I spend the time here. And honestly? I wasn’t going to argue.

We walked inside, and Kiara’s mom greeted us with her usual warmth. “Aunty is so sweet,” I thought, smiling as we exchanged pleasantries. Then Kiara and I went upstairs to her room. I tossed my bag onto the couch and laid down, stretching my legs.

Kiara disappeared into the washroom to freshen up, and when she came back, she flopped down beside me. We talked for a while about nothing in particular until I finally got up to freshen up too.

Later, we both headed down for dinner. After we finished, I told Aunty, “Main ab chalti hu ghar.”

But she immediately shook her head. “Nahi,Tum kahi nhi jaogi. Akeli rehne ki zarurat nahi hai.”

(I should go now to my house)(No you are not going anywhere you don't have to stay alone)

Kiara laughed softly at me and said,"Bola tha na nhi jana mila ga,Aab chal."Honestly, she treated me like her own daughter,I thought.

(I told you,you won't be allowed to go,now let's go)

Back in Kiara’s room, we were still chatting when my phone lit up with a video call from my dear brother, Avayan.

“Hey bhai!” I grinned, picking up. (Hey,brother)

“Hey Agni! Kaise hai?” ("hey Agni,how are you?")

“Main achhi hoon! Aap kaisa ho? Aur dinner kiya?”(I'm good, how are you, And you had dinner?")

“Ha, abhi kiya. Tumne?”(yes,I did it,you?")

“Ha maine bhi abhi kiya. Main Kiara ke ghar mein hoon. Aunty ne bola yaha rukna, akelay rehne ki zarurat nahi.”(ye i also had it now, I'm in Kiara's house,Aunty said to stay here,not to stay alone)

“Oh! Sahi hai. Tu Kiara ke ghar mein chali gayi, ab mujhe tension nahi hogi,”("it's good,you went to her house and I won't be in tension) he chuckled. “Aur bol, tera university ka first day kaisa tha?”(and how was your first day of University?)

“Bhai, sab mast tha! Sab professors bhi achhe the aur campus bhi. Bohot accha laga. Aaj jab main aur Kiara ne entry ki na… sab dekh rahe the. Kya solid entry thi humari!”(Everything was very good!Every professor and even campus was very nice.You know when we entered college today everyone was looking at us.what  a fire entry we did!)

Avayan laughed, “Ooo! Haan, tum dono meri behen ho, toh entry bhi solid honi chahiye thi!”(Oo!You both are my sister so the entry would obviously be fire)

I scoffed playfully, “Aur Kiara kahan hai?”Avayan asked.

“Woh yahi hai, ek second,” I said, passing the phone.

“Hey bhai!” Kiara smiled.

“Hey Kiara! Kaise ho? Aur university ka pehla din kaisa tha?”

“Achi hoon, aur university ka first day bhi bohot acha tha. Aap bolo, aapka kaisa ho?”

“Main bhi acha hoon,” Avayan replied.

Kiara grinned, “Pata hai bhai, aaj ye pagal ek ladke ko suna kar aayi.”

I gave her a side glare. “Kya! Aaj he,Aaj toh chhod deti.”Avayan said. Bhai, aapko pata bhi nahi hai main ne usko kyon sunaaya tha.”

“Boli gi toh pata chalaga na. Bol, kya sunaya tha?” Avayan asked, amused.

“Bhai, main aur Kiara cafeteria ja rahe the, baat karte karte, aur achanak do ladke aaye aur mujhe dhakka dene lage.”

Kiara jumped in, “Bhai, main batati hoon! Hum  cafeteria jaa rahe the aur wahan se do ladke baat karte hue aa rahe the. Usme se ek ladka galti se Agni se takra gaya aur Agni gintey gintey bachi. Fir humari madam ne usko aise sunaaya ki us bichare ko samajh hi nahi aaya kya hua!”

I rolled my eyes, “Bichara?? Bhai, bichara nahi tha woh. Uski wajah se main girti girti bachi, aur woh badtameez galti maan bhi nahi raha tha!Usko laga ki mai uske bestfriend ko bol rhi hu.Like seriously.” Toh maine usko wahi pe suna diya.”

Avayan laughed, “Sahi hai. Ladka toh pura brainless tha. Matlab, usko laga ki tu uske bestfriend ko bol rahi thi.”

(For Real!The guy was so stupid.He thought that you were telling his best friend, rather than him)

Kiara and I said together, “Exactly!!”

We kept talking for a while longer, laughing over every silly detail, until the night grew quieter. Eventually, we all said goodnight and drifted into sleep, the soft hum of the pool outside lulling me into dreams.
